2. History of Gangotri Temple
Gangotri marks the point where the Ganga is believed to have descended to earth, according to Hindu mythology, though its true glacial source, Gaumukh, lies further upstream. The temple was built in the early 19th century by a Gorkha commander and remains a key stop on the Himalayan pilgrimage route.
